Everything You Need to Know About Zepbound® for Weight Loss

“Ozempic” has become the umbrella term used to refer to the class of medications that’s associated with weight loss. And while Ozempic® is a treatment for type 2 diabetes that has been shown to promote weight loss, there are other medications that have been specifically developed for chronic weight management. One of these medications is Zepbound®.

In this article, we’ll help you understand all there is to know about Zepbound, including who may be eligible for the medication, how it’s taken, and how it compares to other weight loss medications.

What is Zepbound®?

Zepbound is an injectable prescription medication that’s been FDA-approved for chronic weight management alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise. It’s prescribed to adults who are overweight or obese who have weight-related medical concerns to help them lose weight and keep it off.

The main ingredient in Zepbound is tirzepatide – a dual agonist of GLP-1 and GIP. GLP-1 and GIP are naturally occurring hormones in the body that help regulate blood sugar levels, promote feelings of fullness, and suppress appetite. By mimicking these two hormones, Zepbound helps the brain slow down intestinal function, which in turn promotes weight loss.

Who Can Benefit from Zepbound®?

Zepbound was specifically developed for overweight and obese adults with a weight-related health condition. Eligible patients include those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above or a BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related comorbidity. When combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, Zepbound can help those who may not have been able to lose weight and keep it off with lifestyle changes alone.

Being overweight or obese can take a toll on the body – both physically and mentally. Fad diets and extreme workouts may be effective for some, but often only help those with chronic weight concerns shed pounds temporarily. Zepbound helps regulate appetite and food intake to help those who take it establish a healthy relationship with food, so that when they stop taking it, they don’t experience weight gain.

How Does Zepbound® Compare to Other Weight Loss Medications?

Patients and healthcare providers might choose Zepbound® over other options due to its dual benefits of weight loss and improvements in metabolic health. For individuals looking for sustainable weight management and long-term health benefits rather than short-term weight loss, Zepbound® may be a more effective and comprehensive option. However, the choice between Zepbound® and alternatives will depend on individual needs, treatment goals, and medical history.

Compared to semaglutide (the main ingredient in Ozempic® and Wegovy®), tirzepatide has been shown to produce more significant weight loss results. Research indicates that while both medications are effective in helping adults who are overweight or obese reduce body weight, patients treated with tirzepatide generally achieve greater overall weight loss. The majority of individuals experienced at least a 5% reduction in body weight, but those on tirzepatide saw larger reductions and were more likely to reach clinically meaningful weight loss milestones.

When comparing Zepbound® to non-GLP-1 weight loss options like phentermine, several factors come into play. Zepbound® often provides more sustained weight loss by regulating appetite and improving metabolic health. Non-GLP-1 options, like phentermine, tend to offer short-term results through appetite suppression.

Another key advantage of Zepbound® is that it also supports better blood sugar control, lowering the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This makes it a more comprehensive option for long-term health. Additionally, phentermine is classified as a schedule IV stimulant with potential risks of dependence or misuse. Zepbound® does not carry those concerns.

However, accessibility and cost may influence a patient's decision, as GLP-1 medications like Zepbound® are often more expensive and not always covered by insurance. Ultimately, healthcare providers might choose Zepbound® over other medications due to its broader benefits for both weight management and overall metabolic health, making it a solid choice for those seeking sustainable, long-term results.

How is Zepbound® Taken?

Zepbound is taken as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection, meaning it is administered under the skin using a pre-filled pen. The dosage is gradually increased over time to help minimize potential side effects, starting with a lower dose and adjusting as your body becomes more accustomed to the medication. This approach allows for better tolerance while still promoting effective weight loss.

Typically, once your weight loss goal is achieved, your healthcare provider will establish a maintenance plan with a lower dosage and frequency to help you keep the weight off. Zepbound is intended for long-term use, so your healthcare provider can provide recommendations for how long you take Zepbound and what your dosage will be.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If your missed dose is more than two days away, be sure to take it as soon as you remember. However, if your next scheduled dose is within two days, it’s best to skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule the following week.

Taking more than one dose within a two-day period can raise your risk of side effects, so it’s a good idea to consult your healthcare provider for guidance after missing a dose.

If you miss two or more weeks of doses, your provider may recommend restarting your treatment.

Potential Side Effects and Risks

Zepbound® can cause some common side effects – such as nausea, vomiting, and digestive issues – particularly as your body adjusts to the medication. While these symptoms are usually mild, they can be bothersome for some patients.

More serious risks include the potential for pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, or kidney issues. Although these complications are less common, they require immediate medical attention if symptoms arise, such as severe abdominal pain or persistent nausea.

Because of these risks, it’s important to take Zepbound® under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Personalized advice from your doctor will help ensure the medication is used safely and effectively, considering your unique medical history and needs.
