What is Telemedicine?

Telemedicine is a form of telehealth service that uses technology to offer remote medical care.

The goal is to improve healthcare delivery through the use of electronic communication tools to diagnose conditions and recommend or prescribe treatments.

Telemedicine also includes real-time consultations between healthcare professionals and patients. These consultations usually involve privately and securely sharing medical information electronically and examining a patient virtually to make a diagnosis.

To put it simply, telemedicine allows doctors to diagnose, treat, and consult with patients in real-time – and you get the care you need from the comfort of your home.

What is Virtual Care, and is it Telemedicine?

Virtual care may be a better characterization of telemedicine today, considering the move away from the telephone toward other methods of communication.

While the two terms can be used interchangeably, “virtual care” does a better job of capturing other communication strategies, like video call appointments.

How Does Rex MD Employ Telemedicine?

Rex MD’s use of telemedicine gives patients access to healthcare without the hassle. With our virtual platform, patients can receive treatment for conditions like erectile dysfunction, weight management, conditions associated with low testosterone, and hair loss from licensed healthcare providers – without a long drawn out visit to a doctor’s office.

This is thanks to asynchronous telemedicine, or “store and forward” technology. Simply put, you and your provider are not necessarily communicating in real-time. For example, you may be asked to answer some questions about your symptoms or submit a picture of your thinning hairline. Your physician will then review your input, request any additional information needed, and prescribe a treatment, if appropriate. Next thing you know, your medication will arrive at your doorstep.

At Rex MD, we employ both synchronous and asynchronous telemedicine to make life easier for you. By saving you time, money, and trips to the doctor’s office, we’re helping you prioritize your health. And you’ll never find yourself waiting in a doctor’s office again – your doctor is just one click away!

What are the Benefits of Telemedicine?

  • 1. Convenience and flexibility

Telemedicine simplifies the process of receiving medical care by removing the need to physically visit the doctor’s office. This is particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues, limited transportation options, or packed schedules. Telemedicine consultations can often be asynchronous, meaning you can communicate with your doctor without being at the same place at the same time.

Virtual and asynchronous consultations typically reduce or eliminate waiting times compared to in-person visits. This is especially advantageous for non-emergency conditions that need timely attention to prevent them from worsening.

  • 2. Cost-effectiveness

A doctor’s appointment can be expensive, even for those with health insurance. Telemedicine typically offers more budget-friendly out-of-pocket costs for a range of health conditions. It also helps patients save money on transportation costs and parking expenses, as well as child care and/or elder care costs.

  • 3. Ongoing care

Telehealth can serve as a useful tool to maintain ongoing communication between doctor and patient. It’s a convenient method to maintain continuous care – particularly for those with chronic conditions. Virtual consultations and remote monitoring enable healthcare providers to:

    • Monitor patients’ progress
    • Address issues promptly
    • Make necessary adjustments to treatments, such as refilling prescriptions
  • 4. Overall improved access to healthcare

Telemedicine helps us to narrow the healthcare gap for people across the U.S. Due to its affordability, it can be a viable option for those without health insurance. It also makes healthcare more convenient for those who can't easily take time off work or family responsibilities to visit a doctor. Additionally, telehealth connects patients in remote areas with medical professionals, ensuring they receive the care they need despite geographical barriers.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone use telemedicine?

Telemedicine is ideal for a variety of care needs. It's significantly impacting primary care, often saving you a trip to your family doctor for minor issues.

If it’s not an emergency, your doctor can likely make an initial diagnosis just by seeing images or learning about your symptoms.

That’s why conditions like erectile dysfunction, hair loss, hypogonadism, and weight management are at the forefront of telemedicine. They’re common, sensitive issues that are well-served from the convenience and privacy of remote consultations. Additionally, these conditions often require ongoing management, which telemedicine can provide more easily through regular, virtual follow-ups.

Is telemedicine affordable?

Telemedicine typically costs less than a traditional in-person medical visit, and it can even save you money.

Telemedicine often provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional healthcare visits. By eliminating the need for travel and reducing wait times, telemedicine can lower overall healthcare expenses. Many telemedicine services also offer flexible pricing options, making accessible, high-quality care more affordable than ever.

Is telemedicine safe?

Yes! Telemedicine is completely safe and effective, and your private information is secure.

Telemedicine allows doctors to assist patients efficiently, conveniently, and discreetly. However, it’s important to recognize that telehealth is not a suitable option for medical emergencies or instances where an in-person physical examination is required.

Where are the doctors based?

By law, all Rex MD-affiliated clinicians are licensed in the states in which they deliver their services.

How do I communicate with my doctor?

At Rex MD, your diagnosis and prescription begins with a virtual medical assessment. This begins with a simple Q&A form, and for many of our patients, you will not need to speak directly to a doctor.

If your Rex MD physician has follow-up questions, these can often be answered by text chat or email.

While it’s possible – and sometimes necessary – to arrange a direct conversation with a doctor, an asynchronous online consultation will often be sufficient for many conditions. Some states do require an audio or video call, which will be arranged during the process.

Note: Certain prescription medications require a synchronous call with a licensed physician.
