Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men: Is it Normal in Your 20s?

While erectile dysfunction in older men is more common, getting older doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get ED. Similarly, your youth isn't enough to protect you from it, either.
It may be concerning to you if you’re a guy in your 20s or 30s and you’re having trouble getting or maintaining an erection. But, it may not be as uncommon as you think.
In order for a guy to achieve an erection, a series of complex chemical reactions takes place in his body. The process requires the brain, nerves, arteries, veins, muscles, hormones, spine, and heart to function properly and in tandem. If there are any issues relating to one of these components, a guy can end up having difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection.
Why Do the Odds of Erectile Dysfunction Increase with Age?
The exact reasons for why erectile dysfunction is so influenced by age are yet to be discovered, but there are several leading theories.
One of them is based around the natural drop in testosterone production. At some point during his late 20s or early 30s, a man will reach peak production of testosterone. After this high point, the production and overall levels begin to drop by as much as two percent every year. So by the age of 40 (when erectile dysfunction becomes much more likely) testosterone levels are decreased by about at least 10%.
Other theories are based on accumulating health conditions taking their toll. For example, high blood pressure and diabetes result in damage to nerves and arteries. The longer these issues are left untreated, the more permanent damage is done.
Another issue is related to how much the prostate grows as a man ages. After the prostate doubles in size during puberty, it stays the same size until around the age of 25. Then, it starts to grow again. As a man ages, the prostate will continue to grow larger and can lead to several complications to the penis and its various functions.
What Causes Erectile Dysfunction in Younger Men?
It may be hard to believe that young men could be dealing with a condition most often associated with men who are 40+, but age isn’t the only factor that contributes to ED.
Erectile dysfunction is heavily linked to cardiovascular issues, and a younger age doesn’t always exclude someone from developing chronic conditions related to the heart. Nor does it prevent sleep disorders, mental illnesses, or addiction. Surprisingly enough, all of these issues can lead to ED.
How Can You Treat Erectile Dysfunction in Younger Men?
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to effectively treat erectile dysfunction in younger men. Some of these options might require a doctor’s prescription and some of them can be done at home without medical supervision.
Oral Medications
One of the most popular treatments for erectile dysfunction is the prescription medication Viagra®. This drug works by increasing the flow of blood into the penis while reducing the flow of blood that’s leaving it. By trapping blood in the penis, so to speak, it can help to create an erection firm enough for sex.
The effects of Viagra, or other available options, should generally last for four hours. The exact time might vary based on a few factors, though. For best results, most men take Viagra about 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity.
These medications are generally highly effective but can come with mild to moderate side effects and can have negative interactions with other drugs. Talk to a doctor about whether ED meds are right for you.
It should be noted that while these meds are effective, changes to your lifestyle are also a constructive way to improve your mental and physical health – which may translate in the bedroom.
Lifestyle Changes
If you want to improve your sex life, you first have to improve your physical and mental health. Certain lifestyle changes may be the key in reversing your erectile dysfunction. Here are some tips to help you improve your health – which may impact your ED:
Stop recreational drug use: Drinking too much alcohol can lead to issues with erections in both the short term and long term. Try to keep it to one to two drinks at most. Excessive drug use (especially substances like cocaine or marijuana) can also interfere with the normal functioning of the circulatory system – impeding the blood flow required for achieving and maintaining an erection.
Quit smoking: Smoking tobacco can damage blood vessels and decrease overall cardiovascular health, which may lead to difficulties in achieving satisfactory erections.
Manage mental health: Stress and anxiety are also significant contributors to ED among younger men. High-pressure lifestyles, work-related stress, and performance anxiety can all affect sexual confidence, leading to difficulties in attaining or sustaining an erection.
Exercise regularly: Obesity or an inactive lifestyle can negatively impact blood flow and hormone levels – both of which are crucial for healthy erections.
Eat a balanced diet: Young men are more likely to have a faster metabolism. Even if you’re not putting on any weight, what you put into your body still affects how it works. Replace salty, sugary, and fatty foods with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This may help reduce complications related to high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
Get enough sleep: Your body needs time to rest and repair. Try to get between seven to nine hours of sleep every night.
Consult your doctor: Certain medications, such as antidepressants, antihistamines, or blood pressure medications, can have side effects that include ED. Talk to your doctor about the potential side effects of any medications you may be taking to find out if your meds are contributing to your ED.
