5 Steps to Safely Shave Your Balls

November 20, 2024
4 mins

Many men prefer to groom their pubic hair for comfort or specific medical reasons. The worst feeling can be a prickliness between the legs. Not shaving properly can lead to cuts and nicks down below.

There are steps you can take to safely shave the balls in a way that leaves them feeling smooth and clean.

What Do You Need to Shave the Balls?

Personal hygiene is important to keep your skin protected before shaving. When shaving the balls, it’s recommended to use an electric trimmer or scissors. Not every product works the same for everyone and their skin.

Choose a shaving cream that you know will work well with your skin. Men with sensitive skin may benefit from shaving creams and soaps that are made for sensitive skin. Natural ingredients may also work better on sensitive skin. Steer clear of fragrances and potentially harmful chemicals like menthol.

What is the Best Way to Shave the Balls?

Be sure to take your time and exercise patience while shaving. The testicles are a sensitive part of the body. While nicks and small cuts are possible, they can be avoided by carefully following the following steps.

Step 1

Before you put a razor on your skin, make sure that the area is clean to prevent any infections.  You can take a warm shower to cleanse the area of any dirt and sweat build-up from the day. This can also help soften the stubble on the area before you shave. Be sure that the water is warm, but not too hot that it could burn your skin.

Step 2

Before you start shaving, be sure that you can clearly see as much of the area as possible.

Stand with one leg up on a steady surface. This can be done in the bathroom on a stool or by putting one foot up on the side of the tub.

Step 3

Gently pull the skin taut. This helps to prevent any accidents like a cut while you trim the hair. You can use the other hand that is not pulling on the skin to start trimming the hair down before you shave it.

Step 4

Once you have trimmed the hair down, you can begin the process of shaving. Apply a gentle shaving product to the area. While one leg is elevated, gently pull the skin taught. Gently shave in the same direction the hair grows.

Step 5

After carefully shaving all of the hair from your balls, rinse the area with warm water. Once all of the product is rinsed off, gently pat the area dry.

What do you do after shaving the balls?

After the hair has been removed, the area should feel soft and smooth to the touch. You may have to take extra time to care for your balls afterward. While other parts of your body you may be able to shave and leave alone after all the hair is removed, the balls may take some extra aftercare.

The skin in the area may feel a bit dry after shaving. Be sure to apply a balm or oil to the skin to moisturize and nourish the area.

Potential Side Effects of Shaving the Balls

If it’s your first time shaving the balls, it’s not uncommon to experience some uncomfortable sensations afterward. Shaving against the direction that the hair grows in can cause ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs can be uncomfortable and irritate the area.

It’s important to be gentle and careful to avoid the following symptoms:

  • Razor burn

  • Bleeding

  • Itching

  • Bumps

  • Redness

  • Irritation

  • Infection (folliculitis)

Other Options for Hair Removal

Shaving can be a tedious task that takes time and careful attention. Some men may prefer working with a professional to wax the testicles. However, waxing can be incredibly painful. While possible, it can be dangerous to wax the pubic area and testicles at home.

Laser hair removal is another option for having a professional remove the hair. Be careful not to shave your hair before getting laser hair removal or going to get a wax.

When to See a Healthcare Provider

A healthcare provider can help with treating bumps and blisters from shaving that get in the way of daily activities. Certain OTC ointments can be applied to the area to reduce irritation and redness.

If you notice any pus or worsening pain from bumps and blisters, be sure to reach out to a healthcare provider as soon as possible.
