Semaglutide
Semaglutide – the active ingredient in Wegovy® – is a medication used primarily for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. It’s a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which means it mimics the action of the GLP-1 hormone in the body. GLP-1 helps control blood sugar by increasing insulin, reducing blood sugar levels, and slowing digestion.

Frequently asked questions about Semaglutide
How do I know if I qualify for semaglutide?
Semaglutide may be prescribed to adults with type 2 diabetes or obesity. It may also be suitable for you if you have a chronic condition that requires weight loss.
If you are prescribed brand-name semaglutide and find that it is not suitable for you, talk to your healthcare provider about other GLP-1s — such as tirzepatide (Zepbound®) or liraglutide (Saxenda®) — that may benefit you.
Rex MD is here to help you reach your weight loss goals in an effective way. Be sure to accurately communicate your medical history with your healthcare provider to determine if semaglutide is a good option.
Note: This medication is not safe for anyone with a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2).
What if I don’t qualify for semaglutide?
If you’re not eligible for a GLP-1 for any reason, Rex MD also offers Triple Therapy – a doctor-trusted treatment plan that combines three oral medications: metformin, bupropion, and topiramate. These are prescribed in carefully selected doses to support weight loss and appetite control.
Triple Therapy is an easy-to-follow daily regimen, typically starting with three pills once a day for the first 30 days. After that, many patients are instructed to take three pills twice daily. Your Rex MD-affiliated provider will guide you through the dosing plan that’s right for you.
Patients often choose Triple Therapy because it’s needle-free, cost-effective, and accessible – even if they don’t qualify for GLP-1 medications like Wegovy®.
Can semaglutide be used with other medications?
Semaglutide can often be used alongside other medications for diabetes or weight management. However, it's crucial to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
How long does it take for semaglutide to work?
The effectiveness of semaglutide varies among individuals. Some people may start to see improvements in blood sugar levels or weight loss within a few weeks of starting treatment, while for others, it may take longer.
How long does semaglutide stay in your system?
Semaglutide has a half-life of about one week, meaning it takes approximately seven days for the concentration of the drug in the body to be reduced by half. Given this, semaglutide can stay in your system for about four to five weeks after your last dose. However, the exact duration may vary depending on individual factors such as metabolism, age, kidney function, and overall health.
Is Wegovy® (brand-name semaglutide) safe?
Wegovy® is FDA-approved for chronic weight management and has been studied in multiple clinical trials – but like any prescription medication, it may not be right for everyone.
While many people tolerate Wegovy® well, it can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation – especially during dose adjustments. Serious risks are rare but possible, including inflammation of the pancreas, gallbladder issues, or changes in mood. That’s why it’s important to use Wegovy® under the guidance of a healthcare provider who can monitor your response and adjust your treatment if needed.
Wegovy® is not recommended for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer), or for people with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). It may also not be appropriate for people with certain gastrointestinal conditions, a history of pancreatitis, or those who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Your Rex MD-affiliated provider will review your medical history, current medications, and overall health to help determine whether Wegovy® is a safe and appropriate option for you.
How much does brand-name semaglutide cost with the Rex MD Weight Management Program?
Brand-name semaglutide is accessible through Rex MD’s Weight Management program, if clinically appropriate. If your Rex MD-affiliated healthcare provider prescribes Wegovy® (semaglutide), it may be available through NovoCare® – a direct-to-patient pharmacy platform affiliated with Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy®.
Eligible patients – such as those who are uninsured or whose commercial insurance doesn't cover Wegovy® – may be able to purchase it via NovoCare® at a cash-pay price of $499 per month (regardless of dosage strength). Your Rex MD-affiliated provider will send your prescription directly to NovoCare®, and you’ll receive instructions to set up your account, complete payment, and arrange delivery.
Pricing and availability are subject to change, so be sure to visit the NovoCare® website for the most up-to-date details.
Is there a generic version of semaglutide available?
No, there isn’t a generic version of semaglutide currently available. Semaglutide is still protected under patent by its manufacturer Novo Nordisk, so the FDA hasn’t approved any true generic equivalents yet.
Compounded semaglutide isn’t the same as a generic version. Compounding a medication means a pharmacy custom-makes a replica of the medication, and this can happen for a number of clinical reasons or during a drug shortage. Pharmacies were allowed to compound semaglutide while there was an official shortage, but the FDA has since declared that the shortage is over. This means pharmacies can no longer compound semaglutide.
Is semaglutide covered by insurance?
The Rex MD GLP-1 Weight Management Program doesn’t accept insurance at this time. Rex MD’s parent company LifeMD accepts insurance for qualifying patients and has access to branded GLP-1 medications like Zepbound®, Wegovy®, and more. For more information about their Weight Management program, visit LifeMD.
